First, the gold elephant could currently leave the c6 trap without losing the c8 dog on the next turn, since the silver cat would have to leave the trap square to allow for the capture.

Silver can’t defend the trap, as no silver piece can reach d3, c2, or b3 in four steps; gold pieces block the silver elephant from doing so. Now the gold elephant can go to f5 to block the horse frame. The steps in a turn can be used on four different pieces, all on the same piece, or any combination. When I want a brain-burner — I play Arimaa. For the moment, the silver elephant is more mobile than the gold elephant: Since Arimaa by Variantists’ high standards is subpar CV and game anyway, this critique will be intermittently developed.
A frame may be broken by the arrival of a piece strong enough to dislodge a framing piece. Players make 4 moves per turn. It is easy to learn and extremely deep at the same time the ratings among human players at Arimaa. Silver to move can put her elephant on c4 and dog on d5, instantly giving up the framed silver horse but also dooming the gold camel. Also, a piece may not push and pull simultaneously.
One counter-intuitive way to block an enemy’s path is to station a friendly piece on a trap square in front of another friendly piece. If a high hostage can be maintained, it has the advantage of the attacking elephant remaining centralised.
Diagram 1 shows one possible initial placement. The Arimaa Challenge has been held twelve times, starting in Silver shouldn’t allow a rabbit to be moved into the trap, since it couldn’t retreat and would block the intended frame. This type of frame could be broken from the side or from behind, but here Silver can likely prevent either maneuver.
This page was last edited on 25 Decemberat A rabbit is placed forward on each flank, because a2 and h2 tend to be safer places for rabbits than the centralized d1 and e1 would be. Gold has used the 99of9 setup; Silver has switched the dogs and cats. Fortunately, an elephant defending a camel hostage can sometimes be freed without losing the camel.
You can learn the notation now or later. By defending the c3 trap, the silver elephant is protecting the b3 cat, but there is currently a better solution that does not tie down either piece. One does not take pieces like in usual chess. Likewise the silver elephant does aarimaa want to abandon c6, because the gold horse and elephant together could force the capture of any silver piece near the trap.
By pushing the b3 horse to c3, the silver camel would occupy b3 and unfreeze the b2 rabbit, which could then step to victory via a2 and a1. A one- or even two-turn goal threat is a tactic, but a plan to clear space for an eventual goal is a strategy. As long as another silver piece is next to the trap, however, a dog behind that trap strengthens Silver’s control of it, since dogs cannot be pushed aside by enemy dogs.
If a piece on a trap gains a second supporter, or gets off the trap square, it is no longer framed. Silver ryles usually prevent rulss maneuvers.
A hostage can be held against the side of the board, or below the elephant. The elephant is placed in the center so that it can quickly attack any part of the board. A piece can push or pull a piece of the opponent that is weaker, so a dog can only push or pull cats and rabbits.

Arimaa is undoubtedly easier to learn than Chess. The gold elephant can’t defend both traps. In fact, I often have to push them over deliberately to put them back in the rulds. As long as both gold horses remained securely beside f6, and the silver elephant was the only strong silver piece in the northeast, it would have to stay there to prevent captures and then a goal. Syed has stated that he does not intend to restrict noncommercial use and has released a license arrimaa “The Arimaa Public License” with the declared intent to rhles Arimaa as much of a public domain game as possible while still protecting its commercial usage”.
Although pieces are often passive because they are blocked in at home, even a functional advanced piece is passive if it does not usefully fight for trap control. There is no single strongest free piece, but Gold has two free horses against Silver’s one.

If you hold a hostage below your elephant, be aware that the hostage could be unfrozen from either side. A camel frame can be strong, however, if it gives the framer an advantage in free pieces.
Furthermore, scattering away from a home trap may leave a hole through which an opposing rabbit can approach arima. Each year since the Arimaa community has held a World Championship tournament. The silver elephant can switch wings at any time to threaten the gold camel, at no cost other than giving up the frame. A strong goal threat can outweigh a material lead; even if the opponent can successfully stop your goal, they must use up steps and perhaps concentrate material in that area, which could itself allow you to save your own pieces and capture enemy pieces.
